Crawling Valley Reservoir, (aka Barkenhouse Lake) is located in southern Alberta about an hour ESE of Calgary. This spot’s dominant and better wind directions are E, NE, and SE although north and westerly winds can be enjoyed here too.
CVR offers clean water and a very large lake area to explore and find many flat water areas, islands, and other cool features. The southern part of the lake offers shallow areas to kite from. Of course, due to the size of the lake, there are sure to be many other, yet to be explored, areas to launch from for different wind directions on other sides of the lake (let us know what you find, please share by commenting below!)
CVR is located 8 km (5 mi) north and 6 km (4 mi) east of the Town of Bassano and can easily be reached from the Trans Canada Highway.
At the southwest end of the lake, there is a campground area that has a nice, beach area, boat launch, and marina, as well as camping right on the lake that accommodates various camping set-ups. For those who are bush shy or have kids, washrooms are available at the entrance of the campground from May 1st to September 30th – see the CVR campground website for more camping details here
*Warning to Kiters – just immediately ~north of the south campground area launch there is a small island right near the marina mouth that has a rock jetty that extends out quite a ways (~10-15m) where the water is only ~30cms deep. Twin-tips may survive a pass but longer fins on directional board will not! (I found out the hard way)
